How does a Rainstat work?
The Rainstat controller asks for some basic, one-time data. What is your longitude and latitude or zip code? Then it asks questions that are specific to each zone in your system. What kind of soil do you have; sandy, loam or clay. What are you watering; flowers, shrubs, warm-weather turf or cold-weather turf. How about the type of sprinkler in that zone; rotary heads, popup sprays or drip. Because we don’t want run-off, we need to know if the ground is sloped. How much? Are there days you don’t want to run the system? This can be either because of water restrictions or, “Don’t water on Friday because the yard man mows then.” No problem. That takes care of the data that doesn’t change and is handled by the controller. The weather station feeds the variable data.
The weather station is on your property. It senses the rain, temperature, humidity--all the changeable weather-related details. It feeds this to the controller for it to make the calculations to see what kind of need each zone has. Where you used to water for 20 minutes, now you may water for 3.5 minutes. Or, in hot, dry times, it may need to run for 40 minutes, but it knows if it can do that in one dose without creating run-off. If run-off will occur, it will divide the watering into two or more times.
This technology has been available for years--if you had an extra $50,000 to put into it. We can now do it for less than $1,000. Call us now at 254.829.3800.
